Disturbing News

Can't sleep as usual. It's been a good while, as usual, since the last post. Lot's going on personally including the persistant job hunt, lack of consistant stream of income, and medical issues that can escalate quickly if not taken care of in a timely manner. But that's life right? There were several stories in the news yesterday that were disturbing. First was the construction accident in Brooklyn where two men fell fourteen stories. One lived, the other didn't. It was very windy in the city and I can't even imagine why anyone would be working in those conditions....well...except for money. Why is it always minorities that have to be put at risk to earn a decent living? In this case, the workers who fell are Mexican. The building from which they fell already had six violations against the management company. High rise condos, that's all they are building in Brooklyn. New housing for the rich while the poor die building it for them. It upset me being a Brooklynite and all...and I am not rich. It's crazy that over two billion dollars is being poured into the downtown Brooklyn area yet I will probably never be able to own any property in my own borough. I can't even afford to rent here. How crazy is that?!? Where I do rent I have to share a bathroom yet I it's virtually impossible for me to get into a housing lottery because I don't have children to support. Policy making is difficult but why is it so hard for someone like me who needs help to actually get it? The system is broken.

The other local story that really disturbed me was about a real estate broker in her late 30's says she was raped by the yellow cab driver who drove her home. She was coming home from her birthday celebration in lower Manhatten to Brooklyn and basically was attacked by the one person you would think you can trust...a yellow cab driver licensed by NYC! I have been in that woman's situation where I have trusted that I will get home safely to my door really late/early in the morning. Never did I think that a driver would potentially attack me. Thank goodness that has never happened and I hope it never does. I hope they find that sick bastard and string him up by his fingernails. What a horrible way for that young woman to remember a birthday celebration.

Brooklyn was in the news alot yesterday. The third story that put the cap on a troubling local news day was that of yet another woman who was raped on the N train. She made the mistake of falling asleep and had ended up going to the end of the line to Coney Island. Why are there always animals that prey on innocent people? The guy attacked her two stops into her way headed back to her stop. You can't take a cab home safely, you can't ride the train in peace. What the hell is a woman to do in this city? I guess we all have to take many self defense classes and just think about killing anyone who attempts to attack. How brutal is that? It's hard enough being a woman let alone we always have to worry about some guy physically attacking us just because he needs to feel like he's in control. Sickening.

On the national political front...Rudy is finally out of the race. I'm surprised he lasted this long. He was a one note candidate who was riding the coattails of 9/11. He never really talked about what he would bring to the table as far as turning the economy around, establishing medical care for all, and ending the war in Iraq and reforming some foreign policies. Personally, while he kept a strong front during Sept 11th, he was just doing his job. I don't feel he needed to be recognized for happening to do his job as mayor during that period. Did he make positive changes in NY prior to that time...absolutely. However, again...he just happened to be on the job when we all experienced something very tragic in our city. He was elected to handle the good with the bad. Sept 11th was one of the bad days. But even handling a bad period like that doesn't qualify one for the presidency. So now there are four going into Super Tuesday. I still don't know who I will vote for. Will it be Obama or Hillary? I'm leaning towards Obama.

O.K. going to try to fall back asleep for a few hours. I really do hope something good comes through for me on the job front (that's a good match for me as well). After tomorrow's rent payment, I'm done. No more money in reserve. Pray for me.

p.s...spell check not working...sorry for typos...its mad early! LOL.
