Is Cupid Stupid?

What can you say about Valentine's Day? For the most part, I tend to look at it as a day when all the couples in the world decide they want everybody else in the world to know they are smitten with each other. But I can't help but wonder....does anyone know how the heck Valentine's Day started? I sure don't. The last time I did any reasearch on this, there were three versions of how the celebration of the day came to be. Regardless of how it started, it's here now. Why do people make such a big deal about this one day and not the other 364 days of the year. Is it that they can't express their love on those other days? Or maybe they feel pressured to be "just like everyone else." More importantly, who says Valentine's Day is only for couples??? Shouldn't it be a day that everyone expresses his or her love for everyone else?

I know what you are going to say. You're probably thinking to yourself, "She's only saying that because she's alone and single. If she had a man she would feel differently." For some women, maybe that's the case. For me though, I am a "just because" kind of woman. I send flowers and hand written notes...just because. I call friends...just because. I eat dark chocolate...just because. O.K. Well who wouldn't eat dark chocolate for no reason...it's wonderful! My point? Why can't others see Valentine's Day from a different viewpoint? Why must it be the flowers at work day and the heart shaped box of candy? Why can't the flowers be sent on February 15 when they are more of a value? Why can't the chocolate be sent every day so that we can have a heavenly caffeine high at our cubicles?

All couples of the world need to unite. Not unite to procreate, but rather join in unison to abolish all of the counterproductive, competitive, anti-social, anti-harmonous sentiments that stem from this thing called Valentine's Day. I encourage all of you to embrace love and positivity on a higher level. Instead of wearing red on V-Day, wear green. Instead of buying those flowers, go out and write a love poem to all those who helped shape your thoughts. For those who are single, be happy that you love yourself. And for all the couples out there, love the one you're with...but love everyone else too for God's sake! Happy Valentine's Day!
